General Manager, Geothermal Development Job Description – Geothermal Energy jobs in Kenya

Reporting to the Managing Director and CEO, the General Manager, Geothermal Development will provide strategic leadership in maximizing Kenya’s geothermal resource potential and strengthening KenGen’s position as a geothermal energy leader in Africa. The role will oversee major geothermal development functions, infrastructure, resource assessment, and steam field operations.

The successful candidate will drive geothermal strategies, partnerships, innovation, project development, sustainability, and compliance while supporting the financial viability of geothermal investments. This position is suited to professionals pursuing renewable energy careers in Africa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of geothermal strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with KenGen’s objectives.
  • Coordinate Reservoir and Steam Field Management, Drilling and Logistics, Civil and Infrastructure, and Resource Assessment and Development divisions.
  • Oversee geothermal reservoir optimization and steam availability to sustain power generation.
  • Supervise construction of geothermal infrastructure, including wells and steam pipelines.
  • Coordinate with government agencies to align geothermal projects with national energy policies.
  • Support research and innovation in geothermal drilling, resource exploitation, and steam field development.
  • Develop financially viable business models for geothermal projects and explore funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with universities and research institutions on geothermal innovation and research.
  • Represent KenGen in energy forums and policy discussions involving geothermal development.
  • Direct departmental budgets, procurement plans, tender preparation, expenditure monitoring, and resource management.

Required Qualifications – Geothermal careers in Kenya

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Physics, Chemistry, Geomatics, Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Master’s degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Physics, Engineering, Business Administration, Project Management, or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 15 years of relevant work experience, including five years in a management role.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body and good standing where applicable.
  • Leadership course lasting at least four weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Demonstrated results and strong professional performance.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology is an added advantage.

  • Must fulfill the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
